Minor in Women and Gender Studies

Catey Borden, 2018

Catey Borden

Meet one of our students minoring in Women and Gender Studies, Catey Borden. Catey will be graduating with double majors in English and History and a minor in Women and Gender Studies this May.

What is your major?

I'm pursuing majors in both English and History.

How did you decide on minoring in Women and Gender Studies?

From a young age, I’ve always been cognizant of my personal experiences as a woman and passionate in voicing them, so I suppose I was drawn to courses that allowed me to contextualize my position in the world and learn of other experiences.

What have you learned that has really surprised you/changed your perspective?

I think that as a white, cis-gender, able-bodied woman being exposed to any other perspective beyond my privilege has been invaluable to my growth as a human being. I think the biggest transformation was when I took WMST 330 with Rachel Lewis and was exposed to disability theory, which I was never exposed to before. That was definitely a moment I was challenged to re-evaluate how I considered certain spaces and rampant ableist discourse in our society.

Tell us about your dream job. How has courses in Women and Gender Studies helped further your plans?

Right now, I’m pursuing secondary education with the intention of teaching at the high school or maybe even post-secondary level. Women and Gender Studies courses have reaffirmed my conviction that as an educator I would be in the position to uplift the voices of marginalized students who unfortunately are so often erased from curriculum and educational spaces.

Please share any accomplishments or opportunities that you are proud of.

I received the Best Senior Seminar Paper Award in the History department.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I’m the first person to graduate from college in my family!
