This course will focus on constructions of race, gender, and sexuality in contemporary television and how these identity groups are represented on television today. Furthermore, students in this course will focus on genres of television programs and how the medium of consumption of television is important when looking at reception of a series (Prime Time, Netflix, etc.). In this course, students will learn the history of television as an academic study and how media is analyzed based on the identities of the characters. This course is meant to be foundational course in the study of race, gender, sexuality and television studies.

Study of selected topics central to contemporary women and gender studies. Topics vary but include subjects such as women and violence, women and international development, women's myth and ritual, LGBTQ topics, the history and politics of sexuality, psychoanalysis, and religion. Notes: May be repeated for credit when topic is different. May be repeated within the term.
