Cultural Studies Colloquium: Alondra Nelson "Black Panthers' Fight Against Medical Discrimination"

Past Event

Thursday, November 08, 2012

This year's student/faculty colloquium ponders an interlocking set of problems: How are we to map new landscapes of social inequality in a world reshaped by sped-up capitalism, and how can we undersand the varied kinds of social movements that erupt therein: some to flicker, some, perhaps, to endure? Mass commercial culture has come to be planted almost everywhere; anyone can see that. But what social resources do its forms provide, and what new opportunities might be presented by emergent social media in a webbed, globalized world? In short, what dreams can still be dreamed, what scourges can be abated, and what lessons can be drawn from history?
