Become an Affiliate Faculty Member

Dear Colleague, 

We invite you to become a part of the Women & Gender Studies program at GMU by applying to be an Affiliate Faculty Member or a Program Faculty Member. Our program thrives on the active involvement of faculty across the University who are engaged at various levels in teaching, research and/or activism in women, gender, and sexuality studies. A detailed description of our two membership levels is provided below.

AFFILIATE FACULTY

Affiliate faculty may be tenured, tenure-track, term, adjunct, or administrative faculty with a specialization relevant to WGST. Retired faculty may continue as affiliates vis-à-vis their emeritus status.

 Affiliate Faculty Service Expectations:

  • Attend at least one WGST general faculty meeting per year and
  • At least once during the five-year affiliation period (for example):
    • Develop or teach a course related to women or gender issues
    • Recruit students for the minor, major, certificate, or MAIS degree
    • Serve on graduate student thesis/project committees
    • Organize and supervise internships
    • Plan a program through the Women’s Center or on a topic of interest to WGST
    • Serve on a WGST committee
    • Host a discussion on current scholarly or administrative work (e.g., brown bags)
    • Participate in a WGST research community
    • Attend a WGST event or program
      • Ex: Scholar’s Lecture or Sojourner Truth Lecture

 

Affiliate Faculty Membership Term: Five (5) years, renewable

 

 

PROGRAM FACULTY

Program faculty contribute significantly to the mission and functioning of the WGST program through teaching, mentorship, and/or administration.

 Program Faculty Service Expectations:

  • Attend at least one WGST general faculty meeting per year and
  • Provide consistent and recent contributions to the program through (for example):
    • Teaching, organizing, or mentoring courses offered in the WGST program within the last two years
      • Note: Faculty whose teaching load is in WGST automatically receive Program Faculty status (no application necessary) during their service
    • Serving on the WGST Executive Committee within the last two years
      • Note: Executive Committee members automatically receive Program Faculty status (no application necessary) during their service
    • Serving on MAIS thesis and project committees within the last two years
    • Serving as faculty representatives in units whose courses meet WGST requirements or are approved electives in WGST degree programs
    • Serving as representatives of key stakeholder units that collaborate on regular, on-going programming
      • Ex: LGBTQ Resources or Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Education

 

Program Faculty Membership Term: Three (3) years, renewable

 

AFFILIATE AND PROGRAM FACULTY MEMBER APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply for either Affiliate Faculty or Program Faculty status, please submit:

  • A recent curriculum vitae or résumé and
  • A letter of interest demonstrating a commitment to WGST
    • Note: The letter of interest must show involvement in a specialization in WGST – through, for example, programming, teaching, research, and or activism
