An Interview with WGST Academic Assistant Advisor Andi Johnson

What is your year and major(s)/minor(s)?

I’m a Senior Psychology major, and I’m minoring in Women and Gender Studies

What are some of your academic interests?

Most of my research interests are focused around masculinity studies and hegemonic masculinities. I’m currently applying to graduate programs for bilingual school counseling.

What are some interesting things you’ve done while you’ve been here at George Mason University?

I was on the executive board of Pride Alliance for two years. I volunteer with HIPS—Help Individual Prostitutes Survive—doing outreach with sex workers and injection drug users in the DC area. I studied abroad in Argentina for a semester, where I taught English and did outreach work with homeless populations.  I work over at Fenwick Library as the Access Services Assistant when I’m not working as the Academic Assistance Advisor at Women and Gender Studies.

What are some things you like to do in your spare time?

I like to go see plays and dance performances, and I really enjoy traveling. I also like to play laser tag and video games. I try to go bowling and drive-in movies whenever I can. I try to run whenever I get the time.

What services do you offer as an academic advisor?

I do brainstorming help for academic writing; research assistance for papers and essays; peer- review of papers; time management assistance; reviewing needs for the Women and Gender Studies minor and classes that can be taken. I can also help students find internships on or off campus. Basically, if you feel that you are struggling with writing or researching in one of your classes in Women and Gender Studies, I can direct you to the resources you need.
