The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which went into effect on January 1, 2014, will be very beneficial to women.  Women will no longer be charged a higher premium just for being a woman.  In the past, women were often charged a higher premium because they had the potential to become pregnant and were more likely to be diagnosed with a chronic disease.   With the passage of the ACA, there are laws and incentives in place which will require most insurance companies to charge similar rates for men and women.  In addition, the ACA allows women free access to birth control, and free health screenings.
