WGST Minor and Student Assistant A-Jay Sorrell is nominated for Spirit of King Award

Every year George Mason University honors the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an MLK Commemoration.

The commemoration is marked with various events such as the MLK quilt project, a charity basketball game between faculty and students, and a service day pledge. The commemoration concluded on January 29, 2013 with the Evening of Reflection.

At the Evening of Reflection, the Spirit of King award is given to a student and/or faculty member who has embodied Dr. King’s legacy of building a multicultural campus.

A-Jay Sorrell, a WGST minor and student assistant, was one of the nominees for the award this year. A-Jay was nominated for his work with TQ Mason, GMU’s Trans* inclusive support/action group.

“I felt honored to have been nominated for an award that represents Dr. King’s leadership and legacy” A-Jay said as he reflects on his nomination.

A-Jay started TQ Mason after seeing the need for a space for trans* and gender variant people outside of general LGBT groups. Because of different, unique set of experiences there needed to be a space for voices of people with these identities to be heard.

“I look forward to carrying what I’ve learned to the work I’ll do post-graduation, as well as continuing to learn” said A-Jay as he thinks about graduating this coming May.

A-Jay has previously received a Vision Award, Leadership Award, and Social Justice Award for his work with TQ Mason.
