Mabinty Quarshie and Sara Mallick, two Women and Gender Studies minor students, were honored on April 25 as recipients of Distinguished Quill Awards.  The awards program is hosted through the Office of Student Involvement and celebrates the achievements of student organizations and leaders.

Mabinty Quarshie received the Student Leadership Award.  This award is presented to a student who has demonstrated a high level of commitment to their organization as well as members of the Mason community.  Recipients have made meaningful contributions to a student organization or department, have held formal/informal positions of responsibility, and motivate others to contribute to campus life.  In addition, recipients show enthusiasm and dedication to their organizations and display ability to lead with integrity and ethics.

As president of the Feminist Student Organization over the last two years, Mabinty has mentored undergraduate students in their leadership roles, created partnerships with other student organizations and university departments, created greater visibility of the organization, and has helped to grow her organization's membership.

Sara Mallick received the Patriot Award, which is awarded to only one student each year.  This award is presented to a student employee who has exhibited a level of commitment, dedication and fulfillment of responsibilities above and beyond the call of duty while working at Mason. Recipients traditionally have been a team player and a valuable asset to their office, take direction and accept responsibility, shown initiative and creativity, and able to positively represent their office.

As the conference assistant for the Southeastern Women's Studies Association Conference with Women and Gender Studies, Sara has demonstrated all of these characteristics.  With the conference over, Sara now works as a center assistant in the Women and Gender Studies Center.
