On October 11, the Women and Gender Studies Department partnered with Fall for the Book to sponsor author Gabe Montesanti. Montesanti’s memoir Brace for Impact discusses Montesanti’s discovery of roller derby and recovery from past trauma of growing up queer in the conservative Midwest. Montesanti’s work features thoughtful essays on the human experience, trauma, and healing.
Attendees of the event had the pleasure of hearing Gabe Montesanti speak about many topics, including roller derby and the process of book publication. Roller derby has been a vital creative outlet for Montesanti and has allowed her to have countless new experiences. Montesanti also noted many topics related to intersectionality and class relationships that her publishers cut from Brace for Impact. Attendees asked many questions about Montesanti’s personal experiences, and she shared a few recommendations provided below:
- GLOW television series on Netflix
- The Chronology of Water: A Memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch
- High-Risk Homosexual: A Memoir by Edgar Gomez
- The 2000s Made Me Gay: Essays on Pop Culture by Grace Perry
