Dr. David Powers Corwin Receives Term Faculty Development Grant

Congratulations to Dr. David Powers Corwin for receiving a 2023 Term Faculty Development Grant to fund their project: Representations in Television Across Decades. This award comes with $5,000 in support of their course redesign.

With Lindsay Lowry (WGST Major) as their research assistant, they will restructure their "Gender, Race, Sexuality, and TV" course by developing two separate courses split by time periods: one focusing on television in the 1950s-1990s and the other looking from 2000s-present.

Powers Corwin says, "After leaving the course, my hope is students understand how television is a vehicle for communicating cultural values and that in order to understand social justice issues and identity politics more generally, an understanding of television as an institution is necessary." Splitting the course into two separate courses will allow Dr. Powers Corwin and their students the chance to dig more deeply into and focus on nuanced conversations about race, gender, sexuality, and intersectionality in television across decades, allowing students the chance to think through what television can do for marginalized communities.
