Dr. Angela Hattery and Dr. Earl Smith Present in Flint, Michigan

Women and Gender Studies faculty Angie Hattery and Earl Smith spent 2 days in Flint Michigan (October 24 and 25) giving a presentation on their book Policing Black Bodies: How Black Lives are Surveilled and How to Work for Change at the University of Michigan-Flint and attending a community meeting. The presentation was organized by their colleague Professor Heather Laube, sociology. More than 100 folks, including students, faculty, administrators and community members attended the event. Sociology classes are using the book, and the discussion was robust! The following day, Professor Laube organized an event with Flint community members to be in dialog with Professors Hattery and Smith, who explored the ways that Flint water crisis is a form of policing Black Bodies. Policing Black Bodies has been contracted for a new edition, and Hattery and Smith are confident that they will include an expanded discussion on Flint and the water crisis informed by their conversations and drive through the Flint community.
