This class will review a range of theories that explain the development and maintenance of gender. We will focus on the construction of sex and gender categories as they have developed historically. We will begin with basic theoretical readings on gender, particularly on gender as a social structure, and then proceed to examine contemporary research as support or refutation for a variety of theoretical paradigms. Throughout the semester we will engage substantive readings about the construction and implications of gender in intimate relationships and the public sector.  This semester we will devote specific attention to masculinity.

Reviews theories explaining the development and maintenance of gender. Using historical and comparative data, examines perceived, prescribed, and actual sex differentiation in social, political, and economic roles. Begins with gender as a social structure and then examines contemporary research as support or refutation for variety of theoretical paradigms. Includes discussion of gender in intimate relationship and the public sector. May not be repeated for credit.
Registration Restrictions:

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
