Contemporary social theory encompasses a wide variety of approaches to thinking analytically, and critically, about our social world. This course is designed to introduce students to some of the ideas and projects that have been formative in the development of social theory in this period, to enhance students' skills in reading and analyzing primary texts, and to encourage students to use this material to reflect on contemporary social reality.  Topics covered include capitalism and consumer society; democracy and the public sphere; race, gender and the politics of recognition; the structure of work in contemporary society; and the digitization of romance.
