Section Information for Spring 2019
This is an introductory course that will examine the role of Asian American women have in various social institutions in the United States. We will begin by exploring the history of different Asian American groups and how they made their way to the United States. Then the focus will shift over to Asian American women and their participation in history and social activism. The latter part of the semester, we will use gender and intersectionality as analytical tools to explore the Asian American women experience through topics including social identity, sexual identity/orientation, marriage migration, international adoption, immigration, gender-based violence, gender and racial discrimination. Additionally, this course will explore portrayals of Asian American women and gender in media using films, television, social media, memoirs and novels.
