Section Information for Fall 2021

This course explores a history that has been largely untold until recently--that of Black Europe and Europeans. We will trace this history in the longue durée from antiquity through modern times with particular emphasis on France, Spain, England, and Germany. Topics of discussion will include: colonization, global wars and trade, slavery and emancipation, evolving concepts of race and processes of racialization, visions of Africa, notions of blackness and modalities of antiblackness, family and kinship, citizenship, political activism, and intersectional diasporic identities (race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.). Our investigation will engage in relevant theoretical considerations (postcolonial, critical race theory, créolité) and methodological questions relating to archives, power, history, and memory.

HIST 635 DL3 is a distance education section that meets synchronously. Students should expect to meet on the day and time scheduled.
