Section Information for Fall 2017
This course examines teen cultures as depicted in literature. We will read novels, shorts stories, graphic narratives, and poetry—paying close attention to audience (teen/YA and adult) and literary techniques. We will consider how the readings portray teens as members of their own distinct cultural group and as members of various other cultural groups. The social, economic and political landscapes that structure the worlds of teens are central to our readings. Equally significant are the ways in which the texts portray race, class, sexual and gender identities as shaping teens’ lives. Possible writers include Sandra Cisneros, Jason Reynolds, ZZ Packer, Sherman Alexie, Junot Diaz, David Levithan, Marjane Satrapi, Alison Bechdel, and Suzanne Collins.
