Minor in Women and Gender Studies
The Women and Gender Studies Academic Program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to pursue a 21-credit minor in women’s studies in conjunction with their chosen major. Students may also select individual course offerings in women’s studies to fulfill university general education requirements or as university electives. To declare a minor in women's studies, you can download the appropriate form from the registrar.
By choosing to pursue work in women and gender studies, students at all levels engage in an interdisciplinary exploration of women’s roles in social, political, and economic life; women’s roles in history; women and the media; feminist theory; the relationship between sex and gender; the impact of sex, race, class, disability, and sexual orientation on women’s and men’s lives; and the ways in which gender stereotypes influence men’s and women’s ideas of themselves and expectations of each other. Students in many courses have the opportunity to investigate these issues in a cross-cultural perspective and examine the impact of globalization on women’s lives around the world.
By choosing one or more women and gender studies classes to fulfill general education requirements or as electives, students can discover the ways in which feminist scholarship has influenced many fields of study (for example, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, history, literature, religious studies, government, cultural studies, nursing, and management). Like those students who choose to minor in women and gender studies, students who take selected courses in women’s studies will expand their understanding of the meaning of being a woman or a man and acquire the tools to envision alternatives to conventional stereotypes.
