Section Information for Summer 2016

This course will examine how women are portrayed in contemporary visual media, including advertising, television, film, photography, music video and performance art, both in the United States and in a variety of global contexts. A significant amount of the course will be devoted to exploring the relationship between feminism, the media, and popular culture, especially the ways in which representations of gender and sexuality in the twenty-first century are shifting in response to feminist, queer, anti-racist, and transnational critiques. We will discuss visual and theoretical texts, as well as related historical, cultural, and sociological interpretations of popular culture.
