Section Information for Fall 2016

LGBTQ Mental Health and Wellbeing will explore the history, challenges and effective approaches to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) people. Using social justice, feminist and intersectional lenses, we will examine political, social, cultural, and individual constructions and meanings of “health,” “mental health,” and “wellbeing” as they apply to LGBTQ communities and people. We will study the history (and current remnants) of medicalizing and pathologizing gender and sexual minority people.

The course will investigate the disproportionate risks and prevalence of mental health challenges experienced by queer people including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harm and suicidality. How do race, culture, social class, gender, religious background intersect with LGBTQ identity (of potential client/participant as well as potential therapist/helper/ally) in understanding these mental health challenges, responding to them, and promoting strength, resilience and wellbeing?
