WGST Sponsors Four Fall for the Book Speakers
"This year’s Fall for the Book event included four highly inspiring talks sponsored by the Women and Gender Studies Program. The first, led by Dr. Earl Smith and Professor Tim McGettigan, covered their book, A Formula for Eradicating Racism: Debunking White Supremacy, and spoke about the societal construction of racism, as well as how to put an end to it. Professor Patricia Hill Collins spoke about her book, Intersectionality, co-authored with Sirma Birge, and the impact that inequalities related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, and ability have on each other. Dr. Angela Hattery spoke about she and Dr. Earl’s book, Gender, Power, and Violence, highlighting their research of gender-based violence within the institutions of prison, military, fraternities, sports, and the Catholic Church. Finally, Barbara Amaya spoke about her book, Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Lost Innocence, Modern Day Slavery and Transformation, discussing her experiences with Human Trafficking in Washington, DC and New York and her advocacy work in this area.
 
All four discussions were highly relevant to some of the most critical social issues we face today. In addition to learning about institutional issues from a research and academic perspective, these Fall for the Book guests shared their stories and the stories of others who have been impacted by them.
