Janet B. Nalls to Receive the MAIS Distinguished Alumna Award

For the past 10 years, Janet B. Nalls has been an experienced, compassionate advocate for victims of interpersonal violence and sexual assault, with expertise in laws, policies, and procedures at the federal, state, and county levels. She is receiving the Distinguished Alumna Award from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in recognition of her outstanding work for her thesis project, titled: The Future of the Virginia Family Life Education Program: Shining the Light on Sexual Assault. When asked about the impact of her project on the community she stated, “I remain hopeful that the state of Virginia will adopt a more open sexual assault prevention and education curriculum in the future. It has helped me understand the distinct hurdles in place with changing education curriculums.”

Ms. Nalls graduated from George Mason University in May 2014 with a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) with a Concentration in Women & Gender Studies. The focus of her studies while in the MAIS degree program was sexual assault prevention, intervention, and education—enabling her to lead organizations as a victim advocate, social science specialist, and violence prevention program manager in the future.

Ms. Nalls will be accepting her award at the Distinguished Alumni Reception that will take place during Mason's Alumni Weekend on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 5:00PM in the Center for Fine Arts building.
